Promontory Peak
Promontory Peak is a wedge-shaped rise the juts westward (at approximately 12 degrees north to the equator) from the Otemba ridge of Onaona Island in the Dragon Crescent. It is a straight ramp about 30 feet wide and 70 feet long, rising 42 feet above its starting point, with a total drop of 91 feet from the highest to the lowest point. With its commanding view of the lands north and south of the Otemba ridge, including Koukora, as well as the only opening in the barrier reef surrounding the island, it is a very important feature of the land.
While it bears no special scientific significance, save for the peculiarity of its form, the rise holds great religious significance for the native Koubula tribe, and even for neighboring Islander tribes. The locals believe it is the base of a stairway into the heavens, no doubt due to its ramp-like shape. In more uncivilized times, dishonored warriors would attempt to prove their faith, and thus atone for their failure, by running up the ramp in an apparent attempt to ascend the mythical stairway. While rare legends of successful journeys to heaven exist among the oral history of the Koubula, the sentiment seems duly lost on contemporary village folk, who generally do not believe it is possible to survive such a leap of faith.
